Small scale fences as reference of natural forest development

In 2024, as part of several project activities, we began the construction of small-scale fences as a protective measure in areas affected by the collapse of spruce monocultures. The scope of our implementation by the end of 2024 includes 15 fences of various sizes ranging from 25x25 to 50x50 meters, with a total length of 2100 meters. The implementation consists of using local materials - wooden posts and the application of special forestry mesh that is 2 meters high with varying mesh widths, which prevents the intrusion of both small game and deer. The enclosures were used to protect already existing young stands of larch and to protect newly established plantings from damage to susceptible tree species such as silver fir, sycamore maple, and wych elm. The enclosures are installed in such a way that after their lifespan (5 to 8 years), they can be recycled either for further series of fences or for the individual protection of the highest quality individuals in young forest stands. In the following years, we will also use them to collect data on so-called hidden damage caused by wildlife on the development of forest stands in post-disturbance areas
